(Community
Capability
The fountains of narratives
Narratives are the most important basis for our study on the
relationship between humanity and nature of the islands. It has the same
value as scientific experiments or historical documents for all the
natural and human sciences. The tradition of orally narrating the wisdom
of co-existence of human activities with nature is rapidly disappearing
everywhere in the world. This is because of the recent drastic changes
in traditional lifestyles, languages, and the natural environment
itself. We sympathize with the wishes of the island dwellers that are
making efforts to hand down their traditional environmental knowledge
(TEK) to the future generations, and we have collaborated with them to
compile this booklet. This is one of the first steps to return the
island heritages to their birthplaces, which have been often removed in
the name of scientific researches. We dream of a day when the island
traditions will revive; and the children and visitors can enjoy the
drink from the fountain of the local wisdom and experiences.
This booklet is based on the dialogues between members of the Community
Capability Unit of the LINKAGE Project at the Research Institute for
Humanity and Nature (RIHN) and the people of the islands. Hopefully, we
may share our experience for a new network of the islands, in which
local peoples can encourage each other to make records of their
traditional treasures.
