I miss my brother Professor Chun Kyung-soo, who is absent today. I will
address to you the words which he would have talked if he could attend
this forum.
”As brothers and sisters of East Asia, let us place friendship and
sustainability as bases for our common future, earnestly listening to
local, small voices and memories as anthropologists.”

We Might Forgive, But We Will Never Forget: Historical memories of
forced migration in Yaeyama, Okinawa Japan.
Abstract: Forced migration to Iriomote Island has repeatedly taken
place in Yaeyama, southernmost islands of Okinawa. The most tragic case
was the wartime migration of Hateruma Islanders, who lost a third of its
members because of the epidemic tropical fever malaria that prevailed
the forested zones of Iriomote. We should learn from historical
memories by listening to the narratives of indigenous knowledge and
wisdom to prevent the reoccurrence of such human disasters and to
construct more resilient communities.
