GCOE ”Japan Border Studies” Email letter: information on grant for BRIT
XII 2012 (Fukuoka-Busan)
Dear Colleagues,
Spring has arrived in Japan. The deadline to submit an abstract for the
BRIT XII 2012 Conference is also approaching.
The Call for Papers will be open until Tuesday, April 10, 2012. To join us
for BRIT XII, authors are encouraged to submit a 200-word abstract. Please
do not miss out on the opportunity to network with your colleagues from
around the world!
Additionally, financial support is available from the BRIT XII organizing
committee for young researchers from selected countries to offset expenses
incurred in attending BRIT XII. In order to expand the border studies
communities to areas beyond Europe and North America, for which the body
of research is relatively refined in comparison to that of certain areas
such as Russia (Siberia and the Far East, in particular), China, India,
central Eurasia, the Middle East and South America.
Thanks to recent collaborative projects, it seems to us an opportune time to
forge closer ties with researchers from those “emergent” countries. There
fore, despite the economic challenges currently faced by Japan, we have stri
ved to secure a limited number of grants for researchers from the aforementi
oned emergent countries to attend BRIT XII with the aim of incorporating new
aspects into border studies. Applicants eligible are welcome to apply by re
ferring to the following links.

We sincerely apologize for the limited number of awards available. We
encourage participants, who come from relatively developed regions, to
themselves identify and obtain finical support from other sources in order
to seize this great opportunity to contribute to, as well as benefit from,
attending the first BRIT held in Asia!
Additionally, please refer to the attached file which is a proposal by Dr. T
omasz Kamusella calling for collaboration, “The School Textbook of History
Atlas and the Creation of Ethnolinguistic Nation-States: A Proposal for Comp
arative Research in East Asia.” If more researchers are interested in submi
tting proposals with a similar we will organize a joint panel accordingly.
In the next letter, we will provide a tentative program for the opening
and closing plenaries of BRIT XII. It will feature key achievements in
border studies developed in Europe, North America and deliberate the
prospect of worldwide collaboration among border studies communities.
Distinguished scholars will be invited.
We would really appreciate it if you could circulate this information in
any way possible. Thank you very much.
Sincerely Yours,
Akihiro Iwashita
Coordinator of the BRIT XII 2012
Representative of the Japan’s Border Studies Project
